Update from Superintendent - March 24, 2020

March 24, 2020

Dear WPSD School Community:

Yesterday, Governor Wolf announced a shelter in place for all of Southeastern, PA.  Previously, the Governor closed all non-essential travel, services and activities within Delaware County, which included our school communities. Schools will remain closed from March 24, 2020 through April 13, 2020.  We anticipate students will return to school on Tuesday, April 14, 2020, but understand this is not definite at this time.

We understand the frustration this may be causing many of our families but know that we continue to work closely with state and local officials to ensure that we can continue our mission to support our school community. We want to emphasize the importance of everyone staying home and practicing social distancing. Please be safe and have students work on the educational materials provided on our website or educational packets distributed at our feeding sites. Further, Aramark and William Penn have coordinated efforts to support students who rely on our district’s school meal programs.  Any person age 18 and under can now pick up meals at six locations—Evans Elementary in Yeadon, Penn Wood Middle School in Darby, Faith Immanuel Lutheran Church in East Lansdowne, Darby Recreation Center in Darby, Municipal Parking lot by Aldan Elementary Library Door in Aldan, and Lansdowne Presbyterian Church in Lansdowne. We hope to have a location in Colwyn soon.

How we educate our students remotely is an ongoing discussion.  We have a small team of individuals working on a plan to provide guidance for the families of the district. There are numerous aspects to consider as we move forward such as household devices and internet access as well as appropriate instructional materials to manage instruction.  We are seeking the best way as we attempt to accomplish this task while being equitable to all of our students. As plans are constructed, we will inform our families and staff of these developments.

We are committed to working with state officials to support our students every day that we are closed and will continue to update you with prompt and accurate information as it becomes available.

With sincere wishes for staying healthy,

Jane Ann Harbert
